Sources of the Entrance Hall Entablature View Interactive Version ]

Jefferson turned to page 50 of his copy of Édifices Antiques de Rome, which depicts details from the Corinthian temple of Antoninus and Faustina, Rome, when selecting the frieze for this entablature. The entablature's overall model is based on Palladio's version of the Ionic order as depicted on Plate 18 in his copy of Parallel de l'Architecture avec la Moderne. For his workmen, Jefferson produced a full-size drawing detailing its design.
