James Madison Randolph, the eighth child and second son of Martha Jefferson Randolph and Thomas Mann Randolph, was born on 17 January 1806, at the Presidentís House, or the White House, during the presidency of his grandfather, Thomas Jefferson. Randolph was educated at home and in schools in Albemarle County, like most of his brothers, at Jeffersonís expense. He attended the University of Virginia and, after graduating, occupied himself with operating one of the family farms until it had to be sold. Randolph never married. He died after a brief illness at Tufton, his brotherís estate, on 23 January 1834, at the age of twenty-eight.
