Elizabeth Hemings Quarter View Interactive Version ]

In an 1806 survey of Monticello, Jefferson marked this site along the Third Roundabout with the label "B. Hem," identifying it as the residence of his slave Elizabeth (Betty) Hemings. Excavation revealed the remains of a stone hearth located thirty feet south of the third roundabout as well as a large cobble pile that may have been the result of clearing for a garden.
