Site 01 - Slave Quarter View Interactive Version ]

Site 1 is an archaeological site identified by Monticello's Department of Archaeology in 1997. Documentary research shows that two enslaved African-American men, Tom Shackleford and Phil (last name unknown), lived here, on the edge of the "Ancient Field". By the mid-1790s they were both listed as wagon or cart drivers; prior to this they were laborers.

The construction of a house in 1971 destroyed significant portions of the site, and the precise locations of the structures built here may never be known. However, enough evidence was uncovered to suggest that the occupation shifted slightly to north in the 1790s, following the period of Tom and Phil's documented residency. This roughly matches the diversification that occurred in the 1790s at Monticello when Jefferson’s agricultural emphasis switched from the cultivation of tobacco to that of grain.
