Site 08 - Expanded "Antient" Field Settlement View Interactive Version ]

Site 8 is an archaeological site identified by Monticello's Department of Archaeology in 1997. It appears to be an expansion of the earlier settlement (Site 7) near the Ancient Field that occurred as Jefferson began to move the focus of the plantation from Shadwell to Monticello. Together Site 7 and 8 were the early center of domestic activity related to the tobacco-growing activities on the Monticello home farm. This site disappeared by the end of the 1790s, when Jefferson began to focus on growing grain instead of tobacco.
