Excavation at Building t site in 1984-1985

Slave Quarter - Building t View Interactive Version ]

Building t was one of the three 12'-x-14' log structures with exterior clapboard coverings that Jefferson had constructed at the eastern end of Mulberry Row as new slave quarters in the early 1790s. It sits almost directly on the site of the Negro Quarter, which was razed in the early 1790s. Twentieth-century roadwork graded away nearly all the structural evidence of Building t. Only the lower few inches of a 3-x-3-6" sub-floor pit survived. Consequently, conclusions about the appearance of Building t rely on inferences based on the better-preserved features of Building s.
