Jefferson first drew the boundaries of this field in a 1796 survey plat. His earliest reference to it is from two years earlier, when he noted in his Farm Book that 70 peach trees had been planted as a boundary between the Long and Quarry (Slate) fields. The next year, he recorded the planting of wheat on 20 acres in this field.
