The North Orchard was laid out sometime before Jefferson's departure for France. Cooler than the South Orchard, it was first planted with apples, for which it was better suited, but peaches were added in the 1790s. The modern recreation of the North Orchard is planted almost exclusively with Hughes’ Crab apple trees, a favorite of Jefferson's for making cider.
