Early East Road [ View Interactive Version ]

The East, or Farm, Road was a central access road of the plantation. In its earliest state, it stretched from the Ancient Field on what would become Monticello to the Rivanna River where it joined a road on the Shadwell Plantation. The road was extended sometime after 1770, when Jefferson moved the focus of the plantation from Shadwell to Monticello.
