North Road [ View Interactive Version ]
In May 1806, Jefferson recorded that the road "along the North side of the mountain" had been finished after 552 days work and a cost of $184. This new road roughly paralleled the old Farm Road, but provided a gentler ascent by winding its way along a small ridge to the mountaintop from the Shadwell ford. In September of that year, Jefferson proudly recommended using the new road to James and Dolley Madison for their upcoming visit later that month.
