The East, or Farm, Road was the central access road of the plantation. It stretched from the Monticello mountaintop east to the Rivanna River where it joined a road at Shadwell. It was probably originally built as a road to the Ancient Field when Shadwell was the focus of the plantation, but Jefferson would have extended it when he began building Monticello.
